Bubble, Bubble. GigaTons of Methane Trouble // Published on Jun 28, 2017

Vast amounts of methane exists within ocean floor sediments on the Eastern Siberian Arctic Shelf, in the form of methane hydrates & free methane gas.

Up to recently, gas release to the shallow water column (50 meters deep) and atmosphere has been slow, with the subsea permafrost acting as a million corks on a million champagne bottles to contain the methane.

Now, rapid thawing of the permafrost has released 10% of the corks, allowing rapid ongoing increases in methane release.

I'm an anti-imperialist, environmental activist and blue ocean sailor, who is passionate about the earth and all it's inhabitants without favour. Brace for imminent impact as we bare witness to the non-linear unraveling of the biosphere and habitability disappearing for most if not all complex life on the only habitable planet we know of. To quote President Niinistö in North Russia: ‘If We Lose the Arctic, We Lose the World’. Folks we have lost the Arctic.

    240 percent more methane,
    20 percent more nitrous oxide,
42 percent more tropospheric ozone, etc.

We have far too much gaseous carbon compounds now in our atmosphere, people.

The carbon pollution is, by the way, making our oceans too acidic, an 3x more Mercury, threatening the base of the marine food chain.

Huge respect to the field researchers rather than the modelers who all seem to be ‘owned’.”

Methane which is Natural Gas + Carbon + Water Vapor = Global Warming

“While methane doesn’t linger as long in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, it is initially far more devastating to the climate because of how effectively it absorbs heat.

In the first two decades after its release, methane is 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

Both types of emissions must be addressed if we want to effectively reduce the impact of climate change.” EDF

“The 100-year global warming potential of methane is 28. That is, over a 100-year period, it traps 28 times more heat per mass unit than carbon dioxide and 32 times the effect when accounting for aerosol interactions.

Global methane levels had risen from 722 parts per billion (ppb) in pre-industrial times to 1800 ppb by 2011, an increase by a factor of 2.5 and the highest value in at least 800,000 years.

Its concentration is higher in the Northern Hemisphere since most sources (both natural and human) are located on land and the Northern Hemisphere has more land mass.” Wikipedia

“Methane is created near the surface, and it is carried into the stratosphere by rising air in the tropics. Uncontrolled build-up of methane in Earth’s atmosphere is naturally checked—although human influence can upset this natural regulation—by methane’s reaction with hydroxyl radicals formed from singlet oxygen atoms and with water vapor.” Wikipedia

“Dr Nisbet’s hypothesis about the tropical wetlands is the most alarming, for it could signal an Arctic-like feedback loop there, whereby global warming could be causing them to release more methane by making them hotter and wetter.” My best guess is a combination of tropical wetlands outgassing the methane and less hydroxyl radicals in the atmosphere adding up to the perfect storm!
