Dr Andrew Glikson interview on Nature Bats Last.

Todays episode is embedded here:
Dr Andrew Glikson is an Earth and Paleo-Climate scientist and Visiting Fellow at the School of Archaeology and Anthropology at the Australian National University and author of the recent book entitled “The Plutocene: Blueprints for a Post-Anthropocene Greenhouse Earth”.

“Barring effective sequestration of carbon gases, and given amplifying feedback effects from the melting of ice sheets, warming of oceans, and drying out of land surfaces, Earth is bound to reach an average of 4℃ above pre-industrial levels within a time frame to which numerous species, including humans, may hardly be able to adapt.” We may survive the Anthropocene, but we need to avoid a radioactive ‘Plutocene’

Dr Glikson and myself discussed the consequences of a 4C + world and I mentioned the expose’ published by The Independent on 27th of October 2017, covered previously on this blog, where the Oil Giants Shell and B.P. admit that a 5C increase is ‘baked in’ before mid century: Oil Giants admit to a 5C Temperature Increase being baked in but no one else will.

Issues canvassed during the interview include possible nuclear war and the meltdown of the 450 nuclear power plants after the collapse of industrial civilisation, which will leave the planet bathed in ionising radiation of an order of magnitude greater than we have already spewed into the biosphere. There is a widely accepted theory that Industrial Civilisation will not survive a 4C global mean temperature increase. I personally will be surprised if it survives 3C.
Additionally we discussed the slowing down of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and the effect this is having on the meandering jet streams, allowing warm ocean currents and air to enter the Arctic region and polar weather to escape further south than normal. There is no normal any more!

I became aware of Dr Glikson’s brilliant work after listening to him being interviewed on Radio Ecoshock in an episode titled “Can Humans Survive”

In a very generous and informative email exchange I had with Dr Glikson he sent me the following link documenting his and colleagues work: ANDREW GLIKSON 2.0 minutes to midnight in the clock of the atomic scientists  This embedded link will take the reader to http://johnmenadue.com  where more of Dr Glikson’s work is archived.

One point of difference between Dr Glikson and myself is whether or not humans will survive as a species. Dr Glikson believes there will be some survivors. I struggle with that possibility as I believe that habitat is collapsing now and we are terraforming this planet into something very different to the one we evolved on. I suppose it is the 7.6 billion people question that I will leave my readers to ponder. “Soon the living will envy the dead” author unknown.
In our email exchange Dr Glikson referenced the recent Washington Post article written by Michael E Mann et al titled: Doomsday scenarios are as harmful as climate change denial This from the same Michael Mann who along with colleagues came up with the “Hockey Stick Theory”. Now that all our graphs show that level of exponential ramping up of carbon and temperature Mann no longer sees the risk.
Speaking as I and Professor McPherson do about the imminent unraveling of the biosphere is sometimes deemed as ‘alarmist’ and we are often accussed of demotivating people. I reject that position entirely. Good people will continue to do the right thing irrespective and the military industrial complex within the corporate culture will continue to grind the living planet into dust. If you’re an environmentalist and not an anti-imperialist you’ve missed one of the primary drivers of the 6th great extinction.

Feel free to leave a comment in the comments section and subscribe to the blog for updates. As long as the civilisation holds together this blog will continue to report on “The Great Unraveling”!

I'm an anti-imperialist, environmental activist and blue ocean sailor, who is passionate about the earth and all it's inhabitants without favour. Brace for imminent impact as we bare witness to the non-linear unraveling of the biosphere and habitability disappearing for most if not all complex life on the only habitable planet we know of. To quote President Niinistö in North Russia: ‘If We Lose the Arctic, We Lose the World’. Folks we have lost the Arctic.

Climate change or not, resource decline especially OIL & a growing, excessive human population will lead to collapse ending with a greatly reduced human population.
But when you add climate change & the growing disruption we can now see in our climate, it will very likely speed up the date of our collapse because our agriculture will be severly disrupted leading to starvation & mass migration.
The migration problem in the future will be far worse than anything we have ever seen & impossible to cope with.
If countries won’t or can’t close their borders, they will be overwhelmed & quickly collapse leaving them in the same situation as the country the migrants fled from.

I think too many people are isolated from nature, most of us live in cities, we have to rent our space, even those who do have a home, many hire a gardener to take care of the wildlife hostile, “landscaping”.
Their land is just a “view” not a living thing.

I think that’s why they get hooked on electronic entertainment, what else is there to do?
No place to walk or bike with a natural view, no place for their children to explore that’s safe, they breath dirty air, exist in a noisy environment, with the constant roar of traffic & machines so they stay inside & play with their machines.

No matter who is “right” about our future, I still see billions of humans dying before their ‘time’.

Sheilach2- you’re right with what’s coming down the track. The living will envy the dead. The separation between people and nature is a major cause of the predicament.

Well it was worth the wait, excellent interview again, Kevin!

Andrew is a remarkable man (as are you) and his philosophical take on the situation was welcome. All of his viewpoints backed up by the science, he leaves no doubt that the PEMT event where temps rose so dramatically within 13yrs happened, and that we are doing the same today, the shit is hitting the fan right now.

If humankind is reduced to a few pockets scattered around the globe, it’s basically the same as wholesale extinction. Hard to imagine them surviving centuries or even decades with the planet bathed in ionising radiation. Wild dogs in the Chernobyl region, have shortened lives of about 6 years, due to radiation.

Regarding attitudes to nuclear war, this is a very scary report:
    https://www.mintpressnews.com/survey-most-americans-accept-preemptive-nuclear-strike-against-iran-civilians/231497/
Remember similar survey asking Russians about a pre-emptive strike on the US, most respondents questioned the sanity of the interviewer!

Just an aside why is such an important book so expensive? Anyway, -Rock on Kevin!

WHY, when we knew scores of years ago that this situation will come about, we have been unable to do anything material and in time? It’s the systems we are ALL obliged to follow which make us insecure and therefore greedy. Unless we change these systems, we will not be able to do anything. Now that we are in this quagmire, we need to change in a way which does not take away anything from anyone so that there is no resistance to the change. This is entirely possible. There are more things which are posing a danger to humanity than what has been said here. Financials are collapsing, religion and extremism are taking us to the edge of a precipice, third world war a clear possibility and we need to tackle ALL. The Free 45 minute eBook Only Two Ways Left – Continue as at Present and Perish or Change tells us in a very precise yet very well reasoned manner, how we can change and take care of ALL these threats without even breaking our step, with only the determination to change. We need to see the world outside our western, educated, secular world.
There are 7.5 BILLION humans on this planet & our numbers for now, continue to grow. ‘

There is no way we can make change without taking away from people who already have too much. But giving more to the poor would only make the problem worse, they would in turn have even more children & consume more while the still rich would continue their wasteful consumption.

The vast majority of the worlds people are RELIGIOUS & being religious means your immune to FACTS that don’t agree with your beliefs.
I have seen this too often with believers in the USA, they REFUSE to accept any knowledge that doesn’t agree with their WRONG beliefs.
This is an insurmountable barrior to getting people to change & we have run out of time.

We should have started decades ago to STOP POPULATION GROWTH, get off of capatilism that needs GROWTH to function, we needed a universal SCIENCE EDUCATION & a DEBUNKING of religion showing it to be a FALSE & DESTRUCTIVE BELIEF SYSTEM with NO foundation in reality.
Religion is being used by our RULERS to control & manipulate us, to make us complicent with what they want, an EMPIRE.
That’s what we have, a dirty, murderous, plutocratic, EMPIRE.
That’s another reason we will not change in the way we must change, religion & RULERS.

Collapse is certain now, we never learn from our past mistakes, so we keep repeating them, overbreeding, destroying our habitat, collapse over & over again.

What crazy arrogant male named our species “homo sapiens”?
      We are homo STUPIDEOUS MAXIMUS!

We can change without hurting anyone at all AND without even changing our step. Everything you mention is taken care of in the 45 minute Free eBook I have mentioned above. It is well researched and with good reasoning. Regarding being too late, we can only hope nature has it’s own defence mechanism too.

Excellent interview, Kevin Hester. Dr. Andrew Glickson is a treat, as fine a human beings as we’re likely to find anywhere, based on his comments. Good on him.

The media’s coverage of ACD is not THEIR problem. It is OURS. When enough people stand outside Parliament screaming in protest someone will eventually have to listen.
We are complicit by allowing the media to shirk their responsibility. When enough people complain – and cancel their subscriptions – someone will have to finally listen. Turn off MSM.

We are already doing a very poor job of managing planetary hospice. Headed for near-term human extinction we desperately need to find humane ways to mitigate the “unthinkable” misery to come. That is our job now.

Carry On. And Thank you so much, KH.

“The likelihood of nuclear war has risen due to the Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) strategy and launch on warning, namely use-them-or–lose them strategies, has decreased human control, rendering N-war possible due to computer errors. The fear of losing nuclear assets has driven launch pads to increased mobility, on submarines, trucks and trains, increasing the likelihood of accidental nuclear war.”

  10. Thank you for this posting. For me the most disturbing thing occurring is the amount of “happy talk” there is, “we can fix this if we do thus and so”. The planet is in total disagreement with what we are doing and will shut us down. Our collective ego has and is killing us off and we refuse to become humble. Today is 1-15-2021, withing the last 10 days there have been reports of massive die-offs of birds, insects and whales. We hide from the fact that the web of life is crashing and that we are part of that web. The shock when reality hits will be very ugly, it seems everyone has a gun. Thanks again. Dr. Glikson is a Hero.
