A middle-class white guy comes to grips with Peak Oil, Climate
Change, Mass Extinction, Population Overshoot and the demise of the
American Lifestyle.
That sub-head could almost be about me or perhaps you? But it’s also the position of the author of the excellent video below:
The documentary above is 14 years old, everything is much worse now, but it has stood the test of time.
William Catton was interviewed in the video above, my former colleague and dear friend, the late great Michael Dowd, created an audio commentary on Catton’s master class, have a listen: “Overshoot”.
Mike considered it the best book he had ever read, high praise. I agree 100%.
In 2020 Professor Guy McPherson and I interviewed Professor Sid Smith on his presentation below titled “How to Enjoy the End of the World.” That episode of Nature Bats Last is embedded following: Dr Sid Smith Rocks the Boat on Nature Bats Last
“Philosopher Oswald Spengler’s (1932) short philosophical work on mankind’s development and, in theory, its end. In ‘Man and Technics: A Contribution to a Philosophy of Life’, Spengler focuses on technology, industrialism, and man’s propensity for order and chaos.”
This analysis was brought to my attention by a reader of Professor Guy McPhersons Substack post: Science Snippets: Why Humans Dominate
Is Capitalism by Definition an Extinction Event?
Michael Dowd and I recorded this interview in September 2019 in his “Post Doom’ series. It’s been uploaded to You Tube as part of a series with the link to the rest of the episodes embedded in the hyperlink below.

Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night
By Dylan Thomas
“Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”
