Our Ongoing Arctic Emergency

If you think of the volume of ice we have lost 3/4 of it in the last 30 years. Because the Arctic is warming so fast compared to the lower latitudes it is going to have an effect on the jet Stream. The Jet Stream effects our weather down here ( USA) so it’s going to affect our weather“.

Jennifer Francis:  Ya gotta love the understatement!  “The Arctic could warm between 6 and 16 degrees centigrade by 2100 with the best estimate being 10 degrees centigrade warming, in which case how fast will Greenland lose its ice-sheet and other very risky outcomes.”

Dr Ron Prinn M.I.T:” The Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the globe.”
Dr Natalia Shakova Director US Russia Methane Study, International Research Centre:  “When you change the Arctic by heating it this way you are going to change global wind patterns”, and “In a little part of Siberia there is more stored carbon than in all the worlds above ground biomass.”

Excuse Dr Jorien Vonk mistakenly saying the volume of carbon presently in the atmosphere being 800 ppm.

In below video, see Dr Nikita Zimov, of the Russian Academy of sciences.  This great video [1] is made possible with the help of Peter Carter and was made in July 2015 making this data at least a year old in a time of abrupt climate change

Interview at Counterpunch, Podcast

er9858678787u87u8

I was interviewed recently for a Counterpunch podcast, my segment begins at the 1hr 10 min mark and I go into methane and McPherson around the 1hr 20min mark. Paul Street’s segment is well worth listening to if you have time:  Click here, to play ‘Paul Street & Kevin Hester – Episode 37‘.

This week Eric welcomes author and columnist Paul Street and radical environmentalist and political activist Kevin Hester to CounterPunch Radio. First, Eric chats with America’s leading ultra-sectarian ideological criminal Paul Street about why he’s having second thoughts about Bernie Sanders, and why the ruling elites might be as well. Eric and Paul discuss the Sanders campaign, what it means for grassroots activism, and whether or not it’s a dead end for those seeking radical change. They also touch on The Donald, the trumpen proletariat, and the danger of a fascist state in a post-President Trump scenario.

‘In the second part of the show Eric connects with Kevin Hester out on his isolated island in New Zealand to discuss the looming climate catastrophe and the unraveling of the biosphere. Eric and Kevin discuss the bleak, dystopian future of abrupt climate change, the latest report from James Hansen, and why everyone should be conscious of what is to come. Also, they examine the connection between climate change, the environment, and imperialism. Not exactly the rosiest picture, but an important reality.’

Gulf Stream Slowing Down Faster Than Ever, Scientists Say

The Gulf Stream that helps to keep Britain from freezing over in winter is slowing down faster now than at any time in the past millennium according to a study suggesting that major changes are taking place to the ocean currents of the North Atlantic.

Scientists believe that the huge volumes of freshwater flowing into the North Atlantic from the rapidly melting ice cap of Greenland have slowed down the ocean “engine” that drives the Gulf Stream from the Caribbean towards north-west Europe, bringing heat equivalent to the output of a million power stations.’
———- ———-

And similarly: ‘While you were distracted, this climate change warning arrived‘:  ‘With dire warnings of catastrophic sea level rise and superstorms capable of pitching 1,000 tonne mega-boulders onto shorelines, scientist James Hansen sounded an alarm over continued global warming.

In a video, coinciding with a release of a revised version of paper Hansen wrote  with 18 other authors, Hansen warned of “feedbacks” between the oceans and ice sheets.’

The Late Great Chris Hani

967898989898

Nelson Mandela’s speech after the death of Chris Hani

“On 10 April 1993, the leader of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC) Chris Hani was assassinated outside his home in Boksburg. His murder was a near breaking point which could have resulted in a civil or rather race war and halt the process for reconciliation and the quest for a united democratic South Africa. The assassin Janusz WaluÅ› and his accomplice Clive Derby-Lewis admitted during the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) that they murdered Hani and their intent was to provoke a race war and derail the negotiation process that would inevitably lead to the end of white minority rule.”

As I campaigned in NZ against the scourge of apartheid I came to admire the uncompromising leadership and courage of the chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe Chris Hani.  Chris would have gone on, in my opinion to lead South Africa and it would have been a much different place today had that been allowed to happen.

There is a direct correlation with what has transpired in both South Africa and Ireland.  In Ireland the forces of empire assassinated many of our leaders, Ta Power, Mairead Farrell and Ronnie Bunting to name a few and effectively chose leaders that they suspected, rightly, that they could turn and manipulate.  As a result of murdering Chris Hani, neo-liberalism in S.A. is inflicted on the people by a black elite in conjunction with the same corporations that controlled the Apartheid State.

In Ireland the same is happening and instead of honouring our fallen volunteers Sinn Fein has been co-opted into an oppressive government with no intention to peruse the reunification of the country that my and untold other families have fought for, for nearly 100 years.  To date we have been out-manoeuvred by a cunning edifice constructed over many centuries designed to oppress the working people and to exploit the living planet.

We have come to a deadly juncture in history where we have psychopaths at the helm of our planetary survival system which is in deadly peril from runaway abrupt climate change. The Anglo Zionist empire stalks Syria, Iran, Russia and China with the ever present threat of nuclear war.

Recently I was interviewed by Eric Draitser from Stop Imperialism for a podcast that will be uploaded any day now at Counterpunch where I discuss the possibility of these same psychopaths unleashing a nuclear winter to slow down the runaway nature of our climate predicament.  Hopefully I will be wrong.

Invited to Be Guest on Nature Bats Last

596797898989

It is a very difficult thing to call out and confront organisations that we have all been previously involved in over the years but in such challenging times we are obliged to speak truth to power.

Understating the severity of the 6th great extinction is criminal in so much as our opportunity to prepare for the worst that is baring down on us is lost while we procrastinate and promote a form of “Sustainability”, that is patently unsustainable.

I have worked over the years with 350, Oxfam NZ and Greenpeace but now I can’t support them in the same way as they downplay the severity of our crisis. That is not a criticism of their supporters and many of the staff, it is a criticism of the structure and directors.  Incidentally I have a solar powered home fueled by long wave, solar radiation, lithium, carbon and a tonne of lead batteries that have been plundered from the living environment. Mea Culpa.

I am honoured to have been invited to be a guest on Nature Bats Last on the 19th of April.  Following Cory Morningstar, “The system is a racket” will be a tough act to follow. I would like to discuss my experience of the collapse of the Great Barrier Reef and others and the effects it will have on the biosphere.

I find it interesting that Mike Sliwa and Guy McPherson always manages to inject some humour into such a dire subject, Bravo!

Guy and I will be touring NZ in October and November, details to follow shortly. Another great show from my comrades on NBL, I’m honoured to call them my friends

Another PETM Unfolding?

The Paleo-climatic records show parallels to the unfolding extinction event we are a part of today. We are in the midst of the single greatest experiment in the history of the human species. Whilst we are uncertain of how long the extinction will take we can be sure that the road to the end will be full of roadblocks, potholes and robber barons and the odd Robin Hood.

What is certain is that there will be enormous suffering for all sentient beings and that for the first time in history this extinction has been caused by one callous indifferent species leaving behind a planet bathed in ionising radiation never seen before. The level and totality of destruction has been record breaking.

Sadness Seeing Dying Reefs

In 1998 I dived the GBR for the first time and a marine biologist I studied under congratulated me for being the last generation to dive the reef before it died.

In 2011 I sailed across the Coral sea to Cairns from Micronesia and sailed 800 mls down the reef diving or snorkling every day for 8 weeks.

My sadness with seeing these reefs dying is overcome by the knowledge that it is the incubator of the marine food web and represents the collapse of the marine system which generates 90 % of the planets oxygen and most of our protein and sustains most of the planets species.

Our Carbon Experiment is drawing to a close, it can only end very badly.

———- ———-

Australia is unlikely to meet water quality targets designed to protect the Great Barrier Reef, researchers from the federal government’s marine science agency have warned.

‘Scientists, including two from the Australian Institute of Marine Science, have published a study that says current efforts to reduce pollution run-off into the reef’s waters are not enough to meet set targets.

‘Their findings, published in the Global Change Biology journal on Sunday, came as the Queensland government gave the go-ahead for Australia’s largest coal mine to proceed.’  Article Reef Health Efforts Not Enough continues here.

The Collapse of Marine Food Web is Underway

hotp8fucrqmaioki0ro2

20 years ago I dived the Great barrier Reef for the first of dozens of times. Whilst in Cairns I attended a diving seminar focused on the GBR. The fantastic Irish marine biologist conducting the seminar suggested we all congratulate each other for being the last generation to dive the GBR before it died.

What he didn’t explain thoroughly, is that the reef systems are the incubator of the oceans and represent beginning of the marine food web. That web is unraveling rapidly in a nonlinear, exponential manner.  A full 90% of the planets oxygen is produced by the flora and fauna in the oceans and the bulk of the planets protein emanates from them. This will soon collapse and there will be no more food nor oxygen coming from those oceans, chaos, death and suffering will prevail on a planetary level.

Runaway abrupt climate change will extinguish most, if not all complex life on this planet much sooner than anyone other than Professor Guy McPherson is saying. More info on the NTHE at guymcpherson.com or follow his and Mike Sliwa’s radio show Nature Bats Last on prn.fm.

‘If scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef is on your bucket list, you might want to book tickets soon. This week, marine biologists dropped some horribly depressing news: the Great Barrier Reef is dying. The world’s largest reef is in the midst of a widespread coral bleaching event, and scientists aren’t sure whether it will fully recover.’  Full article, ‘A Nightmare Is Unfolding in the Great Barrier Reef, continues here.

Kevin Hester

Kevin Hester is currently living on Rakino Island, a small island in the Hauraki Gulf near Auckland, New Zealand, monitoring the unravelling of the biosphere and volunteering at the Rakino Island Nursery is currently developing a proposal to create a marine reserve near by. The Island has no grid tied electricity or reticulated water.  I catch my own water from the roof and generate my electricity from the ample solar radiation on the island.
