If you have not already seen it, visitors to this blog will have an interest in this 50-min documentary, “BBC Global Dimming Documentary”, via Gail Zawacki at her Wit’s End blog.
It relates to evidence obtained from the three-day aircraft grounding that occurred after 9/11 and the profound effects that just the U.S. Commercial Aircraft Flying has on Earth’s atmosphere. (One degree Centigrade increase within three days.)
Quoting Professor Guy McPherson ;
“The impact of the aerosol masking effect has been greatly underestimated, as pointed out in an 8 February 2019 article in Science. As indicated by the lead author of this paper on 25 January 2019: “Global efforts to improve air quality by developing cleaner fuels and burning less coal could end up harming our planet by reducing the number of aerosols in the atmosphere, and by doing so, diminishing aerosols’ cooling ability to offset global warming.” The cooling effect is “nearly twice what scientists previously thought.” That this February 2019 paper cites the conclusion by Levy et al. (2013) indicating as little as 35% reduction in industrial activity drives a 1 C global-average rise in temperature suggests that as little as a 20% reduction in industrial activity is sufficient to warm the planet 1 C within a few days or weeks.”
Guy and I both believe a serious economic crash could be the end of us!
None of these risks operate in a vacuum, they are all connected.
Imagine what the carbon footprint of the largest most brutal military on the planet must be?
“According to its own study, in 2013 the Pentagon consumed fuel equivalent to 90,000,000 barrels of crude oil. This amounts to 80% of the total fuel usage by the federal government. If burned as jet fuel it produces about 38,700,000 metric tons of CO2. And the Pentagon’s figures do not include carbon produced by the thousands of bombs dropped in 2013, or the fires that burned after the jets and drones departed.”
The Pentagon’s enormous, unacknowledged contribution to climate change
A reduction in US warmongering would buy the bio-sphere some critical time, fat chance of seeing that happen.
The documentary explains how global dimming fits within global heating, as well as reduced pan evaporation rate. (Sunlight photons serve as the most important variable in water evaporation, and global dimming reduces these photons by about 10%!). Increased small particle pollution turns clouds into sunlight mirrors because of water condensation on the small particles: at least ten times the number of particles and condensation than without the pollution. This greatly reduces the amount of the Sun’s energy coming through the atmosphere. Global heating (GH) due to CO2 tends to increase average atmospheric temperature while global dimming (GD) tends to reduce it, therefore reduced GD will greatly increase GH, within days, just as Professor Guy McPherson has emphasised in many of his presentations.
Guy McPherson references this documentary often and we will be speaking about this phenomenon on his upcoming November 2016 New Zealand speaking tour.
Guy discusses the phenomenon here .
When the Industrial Revolution grinds to a halt and we cease emitting particulate pollutants into the atmosphere, more solar radiation will hit the earth and the oceans, vastly increasing the warming which will compound all the other effects happening now, remember also though there is a 10 to 30 year lag in cause and effect with our emissions and the ones now being generated as a result of the multitude of feedback loops that are now kicking in .

Yet more evidence that we are absolutely fucked and can’t turn this unfolding catastrophe around. Brace for imminent impact, ” Only Love Remains” GMP.
This excellent documentary is embedded below;
Global Radiative Forcing (watts per sq. meter) is already at 2.974 for 2015 – http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/aggi/aggi.html
“Catastrophe” doesn’t even begin to describe what this means. But “Extinction” does.

The largest part of ‘global dimming’ is most certainly that produced by ocean pasture plankton and their aerosols. The collapse of ocean primary productivity of up to 50% is surely resulting in the greatest loss of ‘plankton cooling’ which one might say is synonymous with global dimming. The calamity of plankton cooling loss is readily reversed as I have demonstrated in my 2012 large scale ocean pasture restoration project, OPR, which restored 50,000km2 of ocean to health and abundance. Professor Guy McPherson and I go on about the significance of “Global Dimming” but so few realise the consequences are the minute industrial civilisation collapses, for whatever reason we get a massive spike in temps.
Just one example of the domino effect that is already under way.

A most enjoyable video! And – mostly – informative. The central lie in Yale Univ’s ‘methane hydrates/endothermic reaction’ claptrap is that there is NO REACTION involved; in fact, the methane from the sea floor is released by a simple phase change. In other words, the ice cage surrounding the methane molecule melts.
Does the water cool off as methane is released? Not really. That water is as cool as it’s going to get. Just as with sea ice, there is heat absorbed to melt the clathrate ice, but it’s excess heat, which wouldn’t be there if not for catastrophic global warming. As with sea ice, when the clathrates are gone, the sea water above them will begin to cool unfathomable quickly… but there won’t be a human left around to quip, “Gee, that happened faster than was expected.”
By the way, I’ve heard a few university-educated scientists ‘debunking’ that Yale U garbage, but not one of them has mentioned that there isn’t any endothermic reaction going on in the first place so the Yale science faculty should all be canned for incompetence.

“According to Professor Lovelock’s gloomy analysis, the IPCC’s climate models fail to take account of the Earth as a living system where life in the oceans and land takes an active part in regulating the climate.”
“He will argue that when a model includes the whole Earth system it shows that: “When the carbon dioxide in the air exceeds 500 parts per million the global temperature suddenly rises 6ºC and becomes stable again despite further increases or decreases of atmospheric carbon dioxide.”
This 2007 article proves that the knowledge of the aerosol masking effect has been around for a very long time and anyone ignoring it are in a form of denial.

Yesterday I was asked to do an interview about where we’re at in the climate casino gamble that capitalism has bet the biosphere on,with specific emphasis on “Global Dimming” otherwise known as the “Aerosol Masking effect”.
We discussed the coming collapse and I popped the bubble on the hosts intentions of ‘Bugging out’.
Bugging out might work in a situation where there is localised collapse but the collapse of industrial civilisation also entails 450 + nuclear plants melting down and runaway abrupt climate change is on a trajectory to make the entire planet uninhabitable. There is no bugging out from that no matter what Elon Musk is telling his investors.
There was a fair amount of ‘Bargaining’ as Elizabeth Kubler Ross would describe one response to the grief we are experiencing but everyone remained respectful and we navigated the discussion around the impossible conversation pretty well. I reiterated my position that we are in planetary hospice, I don’t see any ‘Deep Adaption’ for a planet wide extinction event. Good luck everyone

“Practical Implications. We conclude that BC aerosols cause a larger climate forcing than has been assumed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (1, 2). This large positive climate forcing has occurred in approximately the same regions of the globe as the negative direct and indirect climate forcings by reflective aerosols (sulfates, nitrates, and OC). We suggest that this large positive BC forcing provides a partial explanation for why global warming has proceeded rapidly despite the fact that the estimated negative (direct plus indirect) forcing by reflective aerosols is almost as large as the positive forcing by long-lived greenhouse gases (2, 4). Another air pollutant, tropospheric ozone, contributes in a similar way to BC (4). If, as we suggest, BC has substantially reduced the net cooling effect of anthropogenic aerosols, there is a danger that policies designed to reduce reflective aerosols, such as sulfates and nitrates that cause acid rain, could accelerate global warming. This suggests that policy-makers should place at least as much emphasis on reducing BC aerosols (‘‘soot’’) as on reducing reflective aerosols.”

Guy and I have been warning of the potential consequences of just an economic crash or the collapse of industrial civilisation and what the loss of the aerosol masking effect will have on the climate, specifically warming.
It is still being debated how quickly the loss of aerosols will advance global warming. For me following the “Precautionary Principle” is paramount. When 911 happened and three buildings collapsed in NY all aeroplane traffic was grounded and within days the particulates fell out of the sky and their was a near immediate spike in temperatures.
October is the time when most of the major economic crashes take place which is why this latest work from Guy is so pertinent.
” Although the paper by Rosenfeld and colleagues is ambiguous with respect to planetary warming beyond that forecast by Levy et al., an interview with the lead author of the paper indicates that the paper by Levy and colleagues underestimates by half the impact of the aerosol masking effect (thus, less than a 20% reduction in industrial activity will drive a rapid temperature spike of 1 C). ”
Think about that for a second. A 20% reduction in economic activity triggers a 1C global mean temperature rise. That’s another 40% of all anthropogenic warming so far in days or weeks.
This is why I follow the global economic system so carefully, sadly we are chained to it. Total collapse will be just that.

I live in Colorado again and the sky here is blue again. Since my retirement in 2001 (when I moved back) the morning and evening sky has been yellow or dirty orange most days, and the orange color has (seemingly) gotten more pronounced with the passage of the years. Now the sky is bright blue again, the morning and evening colors tend to be red and dark blue.
So, have you seen any actual data?
If we experience a very hot summer and very warm winter, I suppose the end of global dimming will be apparent.

“These high-pressure conditions affected the weather over Greenland in two important ways.
First, they led to clear skies with no clouds in the region right at the center of the system, over southern Greenland—this is a common side effect of high-pressure systems. With no clouds, very little summer snowfall occurred in this region of the ice sheet.
That was a bad starting place to begin with—shiny, white snow helps reflect sunlight away from the earth and cool the ice. Less snow on the ground allows more solar radiation to penetrate through to the surface. And because these cloudless conditions persisted for longer than normal, there was plenty of sunlight shining down on the bare surface of the ice.”
