“The sea is only the embodiment of a supernatural and wonderful existence. It is nothing but love and emotion; it is the Living Infinite…” Jules Verne.
We opened the discussion below referencing an incredible article from Grist, I highly recommend reading it or listening via the embedded audio option. It details an incredible feedback loop!
“The planet would be a whole lot hotter if it weren’t for fecal pellets. Across the world’s oceans, tiny organisms known as phytoplankton harvest the sun’s energy, gobbling up carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. They’re eaten by little animals called zooplankton, which poop out pellets that sink to the seafloor. What is essentially a giant toilet, then, flushes carbon at the surface into the depths, where it stays locked away from the atmosphere, thus keeping the amount of CO2 up there in check.”
“But as humans pump ever more carbon into the sky, relentlessly raising ocean temperatures, worrying signals are flashing that this commode could be changing in profound ways. Consider the northeastern Pacific, off the coast of Alaska, where two major heat waves took hold of the sea, one from 2013 to 2015 and the other from 2019 to 2020. A new study found the two events transformed the composition of phytoplankton and zooplankton, essentially clogging the toilet and preventing the downward transport of carbon into the depths.”
The ocean is a carbon toilet. Marine heat waves are clogging it.
In short, ocean acidification is proceeding at a rate unparalleled during the last 300 million years, according to a peer-reviewed paper in the renowned journal, Science.
An article at Phys.Org published 12 March 2025 is titled Eukaryotic phytoplankton decline due to ocean acidification could significantly impact global carbon cycle. Here’s the expansive lede: “Princeton University and Xiamen University researchers report that in tropical and subtropical oligotrophic waters, ocean acidification reduces primary production, the process of photosynthesis in phytoplankton, where they take in carbon dioxide …, sunlight, and nutrients to produce organic matter (food and energy).”
The above paragraph is from my article titled: “The Multi-Pronged Relentless Attacks on Our Oceans.”

Guy and I discussed the reality that we have triggered at least six dozen feedback loops, all documented at his monster Climate Change Summary.

I mentioned that “Researchers have discovered dozens of new methane seeps littering the ocean floor in the Ross Sea coastal region of Antarctica, raising concerns of an unknown positive climate feedback loop that could accelerate global warming.” Methane leaks multiplying beneath Antarctic ocean spark fears of climate doom loop
I mentioned that we are hurtling towards Canfield Oceans, I wrote about that threat in Shades of a Canfield Ocean — Hydrogen Sulfide in Oregon’s Purple Waves?
I mentioned ‘Megastorms’ that throw thousand-tonne boulders over clifftops may be on their way back thanks to global warming

Thanks for the latest zoom discussion vid. Been following McPherson for a few years. He is hardcore and has produced the solid science content to justify his position. As the years, and even months pass with rapidly increasing climate chaos events (Hurricane Melissa about to destroy Jamica as worse case scenario unfolds this weekend) his position is proving to be the most knowledgeable and scientifically accurate.
With a civilisation destroying 2C penciled in for late 2030s by Leon Simons, its obvious that this non-linear extinction event is going to destabilise our country NZ within 5 years(?). And I mean all of it – economy, infrastructure, Democratic politics, Law and Order, Civil Society. However the only yootoob “prepper” content I can find is “right wing/conservative” produced, ironically.
I talked to a young guy in person from Extinction Rebellion(?) a month ago. He enthusiastically agreed that 3C is a possibility by 2050. Finally I was talking face to face with a man who was on the same page as me! Then he started talking about “affordable housing” political activism. I could not find the words at the time to say – “There will be no housing policies or construction, just chaos and terror for EVERYONE, SOON.”
Where are all the “Lefty” and Environmental preppers and orgs? Its ok if you can move somewhere isolated and off grid. However I’m in a major urban center with few options to move for the time being.
There is a Japanese-American environmentalist who stated recently: the Fossil Fuel Industry has won, and all we can do now is “hunker down” for these increasingly nightmarish disaster events – form community networks with others who understand just how Apocalyptic this situation is.

There are some of us around. Since there isn’t a damned thing we can do to avoid what is already happening, we live our lives as best we can while we can. Most are older, poorer, wiser, and have already moved out of urban areas if at all possible in the last 30 years. Not that, in the end, it’s going to make a bit of difference. When the mass die-off starts cutting swaths through the population in those urban centers, the starving times, guess where the survivors are going to head towards?
Chaos will spread from the dense urban into the outlying areas, and then into the country and mountain regions. How fast depends on the time of year/weather of course. And if there is any transportation left other than bicycles or their own two feet.

Most lefty-enviro/climate peopleI know are living rather quietly due to the pointlessness of advertising ourselves in an insane, violent, and collapsing society owned and operated by extremely wealthy sociopath oligarchs for their own benefit. We do, however, talk among ourselves now and then.

The concept of being ‘enthusiastic’ about hitting 3’C is a sign of insanity by the way, but that’s what young guys who don’t really understand what 3’C truly means. They haven’t come to the realization yet of who is going to feed them every day.
And as for 2’C, that’s already here I’m afraid. It’s damned obvious here in the mountains. It only will get worse, and far quicker, from here on out.
